dragging percy off to somewhere else - maybe not by the hand, but the gesture of "follow me" was pretty easy. lets find a corner somewhere away from the others. though vax looks tense and uneasy, and his arms are folded, it's probably more likened to worry. ]
...Glintshore's really the last thing you remember?
[ percy allows himself to be ushered away, his steps quick. worse case scenario, he's walking into another nightmare. as it stands, vax seems rather real considering all the shaking he did.
as he steps into the room, he admires the room in silence for a moment, the crumbling molding and creaking floors. it feels like an echo. he just finds himself slowly spanning his hand against the wall, brow drawn. ]
The last thing I remember is [ (static) ] going down one last time. I could feel it. All of it. And then none of it...
[ going down. that feels like centuries ago, now. how many of them have gone down since? himself - twice, and before percy, a cold temple holding his sister's body that changed his life and -
no. he can't think about that right now. vax takes a deep breath, hand coming up to scrub down his face as he lets out a deflating: ] Ffffuck. [ alright ]
That's - that was ages ago, Percy. You're - you're fine. You better be fine. You were fine then.
[ "fine" for all manners of the word, anyway. because he's here, a not so small part of vax is worried that isn't the case. ]
What do you mean ages, Vax, it felt very fucking recent, if you ask me. Why? What's the last thing you remember before coming here?
[ he's less aggression, more exasperation, and vax will know it from having spent so damn long on the road with him. percy's brows draw. ] And why us, but not the rest of them... I've seen all sorts of people and none of them are ours.
vax shakes his head. ] Nothing you do. Ripley's dead. Real fucking dead. We tore her to pieces after...
[ .... ] After.
[ that's not an exaggeration. and, if percy is just remembering that, then that death must be achingly fresh. especially if he doesn't remember the resurrection, either. vox machina, avoiders of death. he thinks - maybe there's a reason they're both here if that's the case, but doesn't say it. ]
I wasn't expecting to see any of you. Not like this. [ so. ] May as well look for the others, but -
[ there's a silent relief here, that vax is with him in this terrible place, but there's an immediate sense of loss just as well. the rest of their party is... irreplaceable, night inseparable. as he watches vax shake his head, his brows remain knit. he nods quietly. ]
After.
[ his stomach is sick. he just looks downward at his bloody boots, or they would be bloody. the stains are black instead of crimson. inky. awful. ]
What do you mean "not like this." [ a deep frown. ] Come on, walk and talk... let's... not waste any time.
... it's so weird, seeing percy again. especially like this - bloodied and beaten down, just before a resurrection. he remembers bringing his body back. remembers bringing him back to life. (remembers his sister's despair in ways that he will never forget - aches that he has done the same to her.)
they walk! it's in silence, for a while. vax is better at talking than he used to be, and much better with percival than he used to be, but this is hard to talk around. how do you tell someone "yeah, i'm from the future, and boy do you have a lot of shit to learn about"!
eventually, he lifts his head towards that big, broken tree. a place to sit away from others, for now. ]
The last thing you remember's being dead, yeah? Fucking weird, waking up from that. [ haha! boy he would know! ] ...'s happened to too many of us.
[ vax is skirting around the question, not answering in full. he can't. ]
Even stranger to happen without waking to one of your faces...
[ to wake up alone, he'd sat up, thought himself in that dark hell he found himself in once before. he just sort of makes a face at vax being avoidant about it all. ]
Vax.
What's the last thing you remember? [ his voice is tight, pressed. i won't accept a lie. stop dancing around it. ]
[ he frowns, mouth pulling tight, and then says: ] Being dead.
[ it is a lie, but it's - not. it isn't, at the same time. he was, after all, dead. and how many times has vax died over their little journey? he's had to be resurrected too, once even not that long after percy.
it's a safer answer.
(right now, he's a coward. maybe he'll always be a coward; even when it felt like he accepted it, now that he's having to face the entire conversation again, vax shies away.) ]
[ percy sits in that for a long while, the stillness of the two of them considering their words will never cease to feel like the weight of unyielding stone. he takes a long moment, watching the way vax's mouth moves not unlike his sister's, that telltale twitch of a secret. ]
We have some wretched luck, don't we, Vax...
[ something unspoken, quiet. do not lie to me. but knowing he'll need to do more than to simply ask outright. of course he'll need to do more. there's no one to press either of them for their secrets, to needle them to out it as a group. instead, they're both fists clutching tightly to their secrets. ]
