It does react to us in some sense, I believe. One among the residents told me fairly early on that they believed some of what was occurring was due to us, and our relative instability after-- well. Being transported somewhere entirely unfamiliar, surrounded by strangers. That it needed us to calm before it could settle, even though we needed it to settle before we could truly calm.
